Peter Obi has resigned his membership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). He was one of the leading presidential aspirants of the PDP alongside former vice president Atiku Abubakar, former Senate president Bukola Saraki, Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike and Sokoto State governor Aminu Tambuwal. Director General, Peter Obi Campaign Organisation Doyin Okupe insisted that former Anambra State governor will be on the ballot for the 2023 presidential election. Reports said Obi has submitted his resignation letter to the chairman of his Ward in Anambra to notify him of his decision to quit the party. Plane crash land on Agege Motor Road

Aplane was seen on a busy Lagos road after suffering an apparent mishap Tuesday night, according to videos shared on social media, causing miles-long traffic congestion The airline, which did not appear marked, was seen on Agege Motor Road near the busy Ikeja Along Bus Stop, witnesses said. It was not immediately clear what happened to the plane, which had damaged wings, as accounts differ about its fate. Some commenters said it crash-landed around 8:33 p.m., while others said it was being towed to a repair workshop near the airport. Source:People's Gazette 

Hundreds displaced in South Africa floods

By:Adesina Peter The country’s coastal city of Durban capital of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) province is yet to recover from a deadly flood, which claimed the lives of at least 435 and left 54 people missing. No casualties have so far been reported in the latest case, but there has been widespread destruction, mainly in the metropolitan area of Durban. On May 20, 2022, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) placed the KwaZulu-Natal province on red alert for heavy rains and flooding. The heaviest rain fell on May 21, 2022. A survey by the South african Department of Trade, Industry and Competition has revealed that at least 826 companies were affected by the deluge with 31,220 jobs affected as a result of the flooding.

Russian diplomat to UN resigns over Ukraine

Office at Geneva says he handed in his resignation before sending out a scathing letter to foreign colleagues inveighing against the “aggressive war unleashed” by Russian President Vladimir Putin in Ukraine. Boris Bondarev, 41, confirmed his resignation in a letter delivered on Monday morning after a diplomatic official passed on his English-language statement to The Associated Press. “For twenty years of my diplomatic career I have seen different turns of our foreign policy, but never have I been so ashamed of my country as on Feb. 24 of this year,” “The aggressive war unleashed by Putin against Ukraine, and in fact against the entire Western world, is not only a crime against the Ukrainian people, but also, perhaps, the most serious crime against the people of Russia, with a bold letter Z crossing out all hopes and prospects for a prosperous and free society in our country," Bondarev wrote.

Albanese sworn in as PM in Australia

Australia’s new prime minister was sworn in on Monday,23rd May and flew to Tokyo for a summit with President Joe Biden while vote counting continued to determine whether he will control a majority in a Parliament that is demanding tougher action on climate change. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s center-left Labor Party ousted predecessor Scott Morrison ’s conservative coalition at Saturday’s election. The coalition had been in power under three prime ministers for nine years. Albanese, who describes himself as the first ever candidate for the office of prime minister with a “non-Anglo Celtic name,” and Malaysian-born Penny Wong, Australia’s first foreign minister to be born overseas, were sworn into office by Governor-General David Hurley before the pair flew to Tokyo for a security summit on Tuesday with Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Lagos Airport Temporarily shutdown

The international wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, was shut temporarily on Thursday morning after a corpse of a man was found on its runway (18R). This was disclosed by an official of the airport, who preferred anonymity. According to her, it could not be ascertained the cause of the death of the man, whose identity was not known as at Thursday evening. She said, “The runway was temporarily shut down while a team of officials from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria and the Nigeria Police Force evacuated the corpse from the runway. The shutdown affected some international flights from landing and taking off from the airport’s terminal. “One of the flights that could not land due to the shutdown was an Ethiopian Airlines flight 3907, a Boeing 77F aircraft with registration number ETAVN, which was coming from Lome, Togo to Lagos, Nigeria. President Buhari signs National Health Authority bill into law.

President Muhammadu Buhari has signed into law, the recently passed National Health Insurance Authority Bill 2022, repealing thereby, the National Health Insurance Scheme Act, Cap N42, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004. President Buhari said at the signing of the new law that a Fund will be set up “to ensure coverage of 83 million poor Nigerians who cannot afford to pay premiums as recommended by the Lancet Nigeria Commission.” He then went on to elaborate on how the Fund will be sourced: “For the large number of vulnerable individuals who are not able to pay health insurance premiums, a Vulnerable Group Fund will be set up to include a component of the Basic Health Care Provision Fund due to the Authority, Health Insurance Levy, Special Intervention Fund, and any investment proceeds, donations and gifts to the Authority.” The President announced that the Authority will collaborate with state government Health Insurance Schemes to accredit primary and secondary healt...

6 people shot at church in Laguna Woods, California

A man has opened fire at a church in Laguna Woods, California, killing at least one person and injuring five others, local officials and witnesses say. Four of the injured are in critical condition. The incident began at 1:26 p.m. on Sunday when officers were called for an active shooter at the Geneva Presbyterian Church on Toro Road in Laguna Woods, about 42 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said one person was pronounced dead at the scene while five others were taken to area hospitals. Four are in critical condition and the fifth suffered minor injuries. All are adults. “We have detained one person and have recovered a weapon that may be involved,” a sheriff’s office spokesperson said. The suspect’s name was not immediately released. Gunman kills 10 at New York store while livestreaming on Twitch

By:Adesina Peter  A man has opened fire at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, while live-streaming on Twitch, killing multiple people and injuring others, local officials and witnesses say.  He also posted an online manifesto in which he described himself as a white supremacist. The incident began on early Saturday afternoon when officers were called for an active shooter at Tops Markets at 1275 Jefferson Avenue. Upon arrival, they found victims on the ground outside the supermarket and others inside the building itself.   According to initial reports, at least 9 people have been shot, including several people who were shot in the head. Two victims were pronounced dead on the ground outside the store and at least one person was taken to an area hospital. Buffalo Police confirmed that the suspect was taken into custody. "The Ministry of Presidential Affairs mourn the people of the UAE, the Arab and Islamic nations, and the whole world. The leader of the nation and the patron of its march, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the State, passed away to the Lord's side today, Friday, May 13," WAM said. "The Ministry of Presidential Affairs announces an official mourning and flags to be flown at half-mast for the late His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, may God have mercy on him, for a period of 40 days, starting today, and suspending work in ministries, departments, federal and local institutions, and the private sector for 3 days, starting today (Friday)," WAM said in a tweet.

The student, who was accused of insulting Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W), was beaten to pulp. In a video of the incident circulating on twitter,Some males hurled stones at her. Some also used sticks and different objects to hit her. When the victim fell to the ground unconsciously, the attackers gathered tyres around her before she was set ablaze. The victim identified as Deborah was said to have made a blasphemous comment on a WhatsApp group.

New Mexico wildfire grows; California fire destroys mansions

The largest wildfire in the US was spreading toward mountain resort towns in northern New Mexico, prompting officials to issue another set of warnings for more people to evacuate. Meanwhile, a wildfire that erupted Wednesday afternoon in coastal Southern California raced through coastal bluffs of multimillion-dollar mansions, burning at least 20 homes, fire officials said. The flames were fanned by gusty ocean winds but they were dying down Wednesday night. No injuries were reported but several streets were ordered evacuated. Matt Robinson Elon Musk’s bid to buy Twitter Inc. is facing more scrutiny in Washington following a report that the US Securities and Exchange Commission is probing whether he broke rules last month when disclosing a large stake in the social media platform. The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday that the SEC is investigating Musk’s submission of a form that investors must file when they accumulate more than 5% of a company. The Federal Trade Commission is also reviewing the bid by the world’s richest person to take Twitter private. Musk disclosed on April 4 that he acquired more than 9% in the company, a week later than regulations allow and by using a filing typically reserved for passive investors.
